Overexertion – In 2015, there were 356,910 overexertion injuries reported by workers. Overexertion injuries include sprains and strains. These injuries account for 31% of all workers’ compensation claims.
Slips/Trips – In 2015, there were 309,060 incidents where workers slipped and fell on the job. These account for 27% of all work-related injuries.
Falls on the Same Level – 157,490 incidents of workers falling on the same level were reported in 2015. This was a 17% increase over the previous year. These accidents occur when workers are struck by equipment, or overexert themselves while lifting inventory, etc.
Falls from Height – Falls from heights continue to be a leading cause of workplace fatalities. In 2014, 647 workers died in falls from heights. Of these, 359 were suffered by construction workers. This was a 9% increase over 2013.
Being Struck – Just over 10,000 workers were injured in 2015 after being struck by equipment or objects on the job. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that these types of accidents occur at a rate of 14 per 10,000 full-time workers.
Vehicle Accidents – Over 2,500 road construction workers were injured by vehicle accidents in 2015 while working in “work zones.” Further, many thousands more truck drivers and delivery drivers are injured every year.
Workplace Violence – Just over 700 workers were killed in incidents of workplace violence in 2015. It is estimated that up to 2 million workers experience physical injuries or mental trauma from these incidents.
Workers at Greatest Risk
Men are at greater risk of suffering a work-related injury that requires time away from work. It is estimated that 61% of the total number of workers who suffer serious injuries are men.
Those at greatest risk are men between the ages of 45-54. Over 280,000 incidents requiring time away from work were reported within this demographic. This rate is down from 2014, yet it shows that this demographic still reports higher injury rates than other age demographics.
