New icon to help improve transparency of nursing home citations

On Behalf of | Oct 11, 2019 | Nursing Home Abuse & Neglect

Nursing home abuse has no place in a medical facility. Abuse and neglect are both a result of people who aren’t doing their jobs or who believe that they have power that they want to exert over another person.

The reality is that no elder should ever have to deal with abuse or mistreatment. If they are struggling with it, then they deserve to have an opportunity to hold those responsible liable for their actions.

Transparency prevents abuse and neglect

One thing that can help is more transparency. By being transparent about which nursing homes have previously violated rules and had instances of abuse, exploitation or neglect reported, people can make better decisions about where to seek care for their loved ones.

Starting on Oct. 23, the Nursing Home Compare website will activate an icon that shows which nursing homes had violations reported. The only nursing homes listed will be those that are Medicare- and Medicaid-certified.

It’s hoped that the addition of the new icon will make it easier to find out more about citations that nursing homes have against them. The icon warns about the abuse of a nursing home resident within the last 365 days and will be updated monthly to reflect the new time frame.

You can use this new technology to help prevent incidents in the future, but if your loved one has suffered from neglect or abuse already, then you need to reach out and take steps to get legal help for them. No nursing home should get away with mistreating one of its residents.
