What are 3 warnings signs of a poor nursing home?

On Behalf of | Mar 27, 2020 | Nursing Home Abuse & Neglect

When you leave a loved one in the care of a nursing home, you are entrusting their care to the medical team that works there. You want to know that your loved one is getting appropriate care at all times.

Sadly, the person you care about may not be getting the care that they need, depending on the facility. To make sure you can get them medical care and remove them from a dangerous environment, you should learn about the warning signs of poor care. Here are three to remember.

1. You see a frantic staff

The first thing to watch out for is a staff that seems to be thin-stretched. Are they frantically answering calls, rushing to help patients or seem otherwise frantic? If chaos is normal, it may be time to look for a new nursing home.

2. There is a high turnover rate

When you leave a loved one in the care of a nursing home, you start to get to know the nurses and staff members. If they don’t stick around long enough to meet you, or if you see turnover happen often, that’s not a good sign.

3. You notice that call lights aren’t being answered

Finally, check to see the response time to calls. If you press your parent’s call button but have no one arrive for 20 or 30 minutes, that’s a big problem. If the staff can’t get to patients in a timely manner, it’s time to look for a new nursing home.

These are three things to look for to determine if the care offered at a facility is acceptable. If you see these warning signs, you may want to look into a different nursing home.
