Insect bites and stings could be covered by workers’ compensation

When you’re working outside, one thing you may have to watch out for is bug bites. While they may seem minor, stings and bites can lead to life-threatening situations for some people. Additionally, some bug bites can cause serious diseases.

A few common side effects of bug bites include:

  • Lyme disease
  • Allergic reactions
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Rashes
  • Palsies

People who are stung or bitten by insects must be cautious and be aware of their symptoms. Someone who is allergic to bees, for instance, might start swelling or need an epinephrine injection. Failing to get medication in time could lead to death in worst-case scenarios.

For others, longer-term illnesses are possible. Lyme disease, a tick-borne illness, can cause healthy, active people to suffer from dizziness, shortness of breath, muscle pain and severe headaches among other illnesses. In worst-case scenarios, Lyme disease can lead to permanent memory loss and brain injuries.

Are bug bites and stings covered under workers’ compensation?

Typically, if you are injured during the normal business day while you’re working, you’ll be covered by workers’ compensation. This includes if you develop an illness from exposure to bugs on the job. For example, if you are stung by a bee while cleaning at work and develop an allergy, the medical care that you receive should be covered by workers’ compensation. Similarly, if you suffer from a tick bite and can prove that you were bitten at work, you may be able to seek workers’ compensation. That compensation can cover medical testing and coverage if you have been infected with Lyme Disease due to your job.
